 1900’s - Jacob Goozh left his family, in Europe, to begin a new life in The United States. 1922 – Jacob opened Empire Photo Studio, at 917 Pennsylvania Avenue. At this time, Mr. Goozh went out into the streets of Washington and photographed many of the soldiers returning home from The First World War. Utilizing “tin-type” photography, which allowed the photo to be developed within minutes, these soldiers were able to return home with an instant souvenir. 1931 – Jacob relocated the business, Capitol Souvenir Company, to 105 Pennsylvania Avenue, in order to provide the numerous tourists visiting Washington, DC, by train, with souvenirs of their visit. This new location was just a few moments away from Washington’s historic Union Station. 1930’s – Jacob branched out into the surrounding Virginia and Maryland markets. With the addition of these new markets and an increase in tourism, Jacob hired additionally salesman, opened a retail location, and began traveling to The Orient to import these souvenir items directly. 1940’s – Jacob’s son Joseph takes over the family business. Under Joseph’s leadership the import business grew and more salesman were needed, as Capsco began servicing tourist attractions across the country. 1960’s – Josephs’ son’s Jay and Martin entered the family business and helped establish Capsco as the most recognized name in souvenirs. 2011 – Now, nearly 90 years later and under the leadership of a Jacob’s great grandson, Capsco still runs a local Washington, DC Souvenir Distributorship, as well as providing custom souvenir programs to historic sites, museums, zoos, aquariums, and countless other attractions both in The United States and abroad.  |
